Gravel Pit Reincarnation

There was a bit of an accident at the gravel pit early this fall. As gun season approached, people started to realize that something was missing after laying on their tailgates, stretching across their hoods, on the ground. Anyway, James Lettiere built this new shooting bench for Kildare. It looks sturdy enough to handle Don's arsenal. Hopefully this time, we can position it off to the side and out of the travel lane. Thanks James.

Oh Katrina

"Goodbye honey, I'll be hunting all weekend. I'll try to call if I can get a signal. Have fun with the kids this weekend. You wouldn't like it at camp anyway, with all the guys around, the noise... you know how it can be. See you Sunday."
We should probably record this quote so that all of us can play it AS WE'RE PULLING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY.

Buckin' A

My guest, Mike Keck, shot this 6 point on the north side of Cherry Ridge on November 12th.
Chuck shot this nice 7 point on November 17th near the southern line where they logged a couple of years ago.

Cool Map

I created the topo and orthophotography from a site http://www.mytopo.com/.
I then had our graphics designer overlay a map that I created in CAD a while ago.
It still needs to be tweaked a bit, but it'll be pretty cool once finalized. I'll email it around to everybody so that you can make multiple copies and hang them in every room of your house.

Another notch on the belt

There was a big gang at Kildare this past weekend, 12 or so. Lots of laughs and great meals by Kathy. Thank God for Daylight Savings... now we'll be able to get into camp for cocktail hour before dinner. Of course, I'm not sure if cocktail hour ever ended.

Monster Buck Killed

Jimmy shot this 8 point, 2 1/2 year old, 127 lb monster buck on November 3rd, 2007. The story goes is that he was fighting with a larger 8 or 10 point buck. Only one of them gave Jimmy the opportunity to shoot, and the rest is history. Jimmy asked that the location be kept quiet, as the other large buck is still around... I forgot the name of the ridge near Brandy Brook anyway.

Meter Reading & Electric/Utility Bills

Just an FYI for some of you. I will be reading the electric meters this coming week and sending out a bill sometime during the week of August 6th. Please make a point to pay the bill in a timely manner (less than 30 days), or you'll see a billboard on Rt. 81 with your name on it. I imagine we will be having a Corporate meeting shortly after Labor Day, prior to our Fall Work Weekend (September 21 - 23), and I'd like to be able to report that everybody is "paid in full".

DEC warns of algae

Posted on: Thursday, July 26, 2007 RAY BROOK — The state Department of Environmental Conservation is asking anglers to take steps to prevent the spread of an aquatic nuisance algae, known as didymo or rock snot. The algae was recently found in Vermont waters but has not been found in New York, the DEC announced Wednesday. Anglers are asked to take precautions to prevent the introduction and spread of this algae. The algae is potentially devastating to aquatic plants and fish habitat. Unlike many other aquatic nuisance plants, didymo grows on the bottom of flowing and still waters. It can develop thick mats even in fast-flowing trout streams. Fishing then becomes difficult. As the abundance of bottom-dwelling organisms declines, populations of trout and other fish that feed on those organisms also decline. There are currently no known methods for controlling or eradicating didymo once it infests a water body, according to the DEC. The microscopic algae cling unseen to waders, boots, boats, lures, hooks, sinkers, fishing line and other fishing gear, and remain viable for several weeks under even slightly moist conditions. Absorbent items, such as the felt-soled waders and wading boots commonly used by stream anglers, require special attention. Anglers, kayakers and canoeists, boaters and jet-skiers can all unknowingly spread didymo. DEC is urging water recreationists to “check, clean and dry” to prevent the introduction and spread of didymo. ¯Check: Before leaving a river or stream, remove all obvious clumps of algae and look for hidden clumps. Leave them at the affected site. If you find any later, dispose all material in the trash. Do not wash the material down a drain. ¯Clean: Soak and scrub all items for at least one minute in either hot water (140 degrees Fahrenheit), a 2-percent solution of household bleach or a 5-percent solution of salt, antiseptic hand cleaner or dishwashing detergent. Be sure that the solution completely penetrates thick, absorbent items such as felt-soled waders and wading boots. ¯Dry: If cleaning is not practical, after the item is completely dry to touch, wait an additional 48 hours before contact or use in any other waterway. Check thick absorbent items closely to assure that they are dry throughout. Equipment and gear can also be placed in a freezer until all moisture is frozen solid. If cleaning, drying or freezing is not practical, restrict equipment to a single water body. While DEC recommends that anglers always take these precautions, it is especially important that any gear used out of state be treated before using in New York waters. Believed to be native to far northern regions of Europe and Asia, didymo has been expanding its range and tolerance for warmer, more nutrient-rich water conditions during recent years in Europe and North America. Accompanying this expansion have been increasing reports of massive blooms that reach nuisance levels, forming thick mats of cottony material on the bottoms of rivers and streams that can potentially smother aquatic plants and destroy fish habitat.

Black flies and the Beach

Spring Work Weekend 07

Though many people had some work weekends of their own earlier this month, the "official" work weekend was a success. Hats off to Kathy, Megan and Jacob for all their hard work in the kitchen, while keeping us well fed. John and Andy Capone had dueling tractors and York rakes. John's rake was bigger but Andy had headlights. The Northland Road and Hill 19 Road got some attention and are dressed up nice. Lines were painted and posted. Road canopy was cut back on the Northland. The grain shed, and wood shed were painted. Many other chores were completed, but I was just too busy to document all of it. This photo captures work weekend in all it's glory.

National Grid Tree Maintenance

Just an FYI for everybody. I received a letter from National Grid that they have contracted with Tamarack Tree to perform routine tree maintenance from the top of the Garlough Road to our gate. The letter says that the start time is May 28, 2007 and a duration of 10 months. I'm sure that this is just the "window" not the actual time it will take to complete the work. Also, the phone at the gatehouse is operational again.

Spring Work Weekend '07

Be sure to contact John Cook if you'll be attending Work Weekend this weekend (May 18 - 20). We will need a head count for meals, so let him know how many people will be in your party. If you are unable to attend, be sure to sign up for a project to complete at some point in the near future to receive your work credits. A reminder that each member is responsible for 8 man days of work. Just like everything else in life, there is a cost if you do not participate in work weekends. Currently, it is $200 per weekend. Any questions, please feel free to contact Bob, John or myself.

The endless battle of rowing all over the pond to pitch a few casts where the trout are jumping is back in full swing. My father and I went out with Marlo and Jude last Sunday. We were trolling with Phoebe's, and Marlo said, "My pole is wiggling." Sure enough, she had a nice one on. They watched him swim in the bucket and were excited about having it for breakfast.
