The Angel of Carry Falls

Very few of us can skip through life without picking up a nickname somewhere along the line. Lucky for me, I got mine when I was only a couple of days old... thank God. Then again, some receive theirs later in life.
Angel, is a common nickname for Angelo... I don't think its common for James... but what the hell, this is my BLOG and I guess I can make up the rules.
If any of you are fortunate to get a tap on the shoulder and a soft whisper of prayer from the Angel of Carry Falls, you may soon find good fortune at Kildare.
This is what happened to Dave Waterbury this summer before he went fishing with Nick Lee on Carry Falls. This 19 lb, 36" Northern Pike was caught over Old Hollywood, 40 feet deep on crank bait.
If you happen to see the Angel of Carry Falls, be sure to rub his belly for good luck.

It's an old Italian message. Mr. 8pt sleeps with the fishes.

Well, well, well. I guess it is true that diligence pays off. Eugene Renzi spent a full year scouting one of his favorite spots on Kildare. Learning the ways of the whitetail... sleeping when they sleep, eating when they eat, drinking when they drink. The first 4 weeks of the season, he monitored the trails, looked for sign and dragged a stand deep into the woods, 3/4 of a mile from the nearest road. Saturday, November 18th, he knew the time was right. He packed a bag with extra clothes to make the trek back into the woods to his spot. Climbed into the stand and was determined to stay there despite the downpour of rain. Around 3 o'clock, he was soaked from head to toe and the thought of getting down and heading to camp just wasn't in the cards. He knew the time was now. The rain was so loud, the only sense was his sight. At 3:47 pm, he noticed slight movement in the evergreens. He saw the white of antler shine from the soaking rain. From his explaination, Eugene was frustrated as no clear shot was available, and the thought of loosing this beautiful 8 point into the woods was crushing. The buck stopped, and turned quartering toward Eugene. One deep breath, the cross hairs pinned on his front shoulder, a careful squeeze of the trigger and it was all over. A clean shot through the heart. After a speedy field dressing, and quick drag over the wet ground to the truck, Eugene was able to get the Main Camp in time for dinner and a celebration was had by all. 176 lbs and by our guess, this buck was 3 1/2 years old. Congratulations Eugene.

The Kitchen Has Changed

Photos and captions by Kathy Sullivan
It was like Christmas at Kildare this weekend. Pictured with our amazing cook, Sue, are some of the new items for the kitchen. There's a new roaster, crock pot, mini-crockpot for fondue/chocolate, a few high quality knives, Cuisinart cookware, and some new stainless steel bakeware. Sue is a talented cook and will undoubtedly find lots of good uses for what we've gotten so far. I'm off to buy more from a list that she and I made this weekend and will be taking more up in a couple weeks.
Ladies weekend was rainy but relaxing. Janette Lettiere and I spent some time reading our books with a crackling fire in the wood stove and a steady rain falling on the roof. Saturday night Frank and Barb joined us and we had a lovely gourmet meal with lots of good conversation and laughter. I encourage anyone who hasn't gone up yet to make a point of clearing his or her schedule to do so. Sue and Ray are an amazing team and the camp is very warm, welcoming, and filled with delicious food!

2008 Kildare Fall Picnic

The weather was beautiful.
The food was wonderful.
The company was great.
It was humbling for us "kids" to be with three of the founding members of Kildare.
Al Smith, Frank Cook and Walker Heap
Thank you to all that contributed with the cooking, preparation and cleaning up.

The Catamount Tradition

Julie Cook sent this picture to me this morning. I haven't hiked up the moutain since 1996 or so, so it's nice to see that the tradition continues. Below is Julie's email to me... thanks Jules.
Hi Ike, I thought you might like to post one of these pics on the LK blog. On Monday it was a bit chilly. So Pete, Barb and I, led by the fearless Sir Cocoa Murphy, took the little Cooklings on a hike up Catamount. It was a beautiful day and a great "view value"...relatively short hike to a nice view. The kids loved this adventure. Pete and I haven't done that in years....well, since we were kids. Good stuff. Love, Julie

And a pinch to grow an inch

The whole fam damily was out on our trailer park pontoon boat and I caught another "keeper" northern pike. 31".

The Trump Card

We should have known that the master of Stark Reservoir would play his trump card and pull this 44 1/2" beauty out at dusk. Roger, Kate and Andie Benton just happened to be going by and were able to snap a picture of this Kildare trophy.

Holy Sh__!!!

My cousin, Jay Broadhurst, hauled in this 32" Northern Pike out of Stark Reservoir on Wednesday, August 13th. A Mepp's #5, with a silver spoon and white buck tail was irresistible for this freshwater alligator. It took me two passes with the net to land him. What a day. We thought this was one of a kind... we were wrong.

All the President's Men

The case of the opened bottle of Crown Royal has finally been solved.
The security camera caught the suspects sitting on the victim's couch, enjoying a brand new bottle of Crown Royal.
Al... do you think we could borrow a key to your camp for a few hours? Or better yet... your house.

When in Rome, hold a Roman Candle

There is a warning printed in large, bold letters on the sides of Roman candles that says, "Do Not Hold in Hands".
I was never good at following directions.

Viva Pancho Award

These poems were written by Dick Lee: Each year, Little Kildare has it's Annual Dinner with awards and poetry session. So here goes: Now comes our annual meet, wherein we give each feat, its just and noble reward. If you can stomach our poetry, We'll consider it sufficient gratuity, For versifying is quite hard. "Hold Still, Damn You!" Intrepid soul this Hunter be With stealth and sneaky guile, Upon the deer to silently see Though it takes him several mile. With rabbits foot and gun and knife And fourteen rounds and a smile He tiptoes along to take the life Of a ten-point buck in style. And in his mind's eye sees the buck The largest of them all On buckpole hang if Lady Luck Will walk with him this fall. So, stealthily he hunts the buck, As carefully he treads the muck, 'Till now he sees the long-sought buck Raises sight and prays for luck, with fourteen rounds along with fourteen rounds along. The gun goes off; the deer takes flight, As twice he shoots again. About it turns just out of sight; Now 'leven rounds remain, Now 'leven rounds remain. Here carefully he marks the spot Where last the deer had lain, And tracks his flight from that same spot To flush him once again. Twice he curses and twice flies shots To find with mental pain The old pathetic hunter's lot An empty chamber 'gain. And now nine rounds remain, And now nine rounds remain. He fills the magazine And finds a tuft of hair, some blood on emerald green, a flag in distant air; Like thunder it rumbles Once more and again, As now the buck stumbles Into a small glen. Again the gun rumbles To touch his hind end and flips him, who tumbles To sit end in fen. Now raising his sight Heart bursting, head throbbing Adrenals squeezed tight, His wit lust now robbing The Hunter 'gain fires and creases the buck, As fate now conspires To rid him of luck. An empty chamber 'gain, As four rounds now remain, As four rounds now remain. "I'd rather eat crow then fail to kill This stubborn old foe who just won't hold still". Load up, he does, the rounds he has left No Hunter there was Whose cool so bereft. Bang! "Hold still..........Bang! Damn................Bang! You"..................Bang! CLICK! Eyeball to eyeball Glared hunter to hunted Eyeball to eyeball back the buck started More bullets were all He now ever wanted A full bandolier A long bayonet He'd harpoon the deer and get his buck yet. But ill -equipt And under-armed Frustration gripped And speechless charmed Eyeball to eyeball Glared hunter to hunted Eyeball to eyeball the buck only snorted. Across the great marsh came thrashing another Gasping twice, Marc, (pronounced Marse..i.e. Marcel) 'Twas Sim's hunting brother. For nearly a mile he's plunged in a hurry Stumbling the while Through bog and cranberry Disheveled and torn Wild gleam in his eye No wind and worn "A buck?" his wheezed cry. Replied the Hunter, Frustration crazed, "MY BUCK" with hauteur, His arm upraised; To which now Marc With careful sight To coup-de-gras This noble Buck's plight. Fired once to send A missle through The buck's hind end Both hams to chew. By this display So mortified The buck down lay and naturally died! This account, written in fun and license. However, the Committee feels there is more to it than rumor but the only amicus curiae or friend of the court, was the buck who unfortunately has been silenced. WE WILL NEVER KNOW THE TRUTH However, we feel there is enough evidence here to award the VIVA PANCHO AWARD to FRANK COOK for probably the most shots ever fired at a single deer!

What do Politicians and Lawyers have in common?

Reservations

I'd like to make dinner reservations for 10 adults and 7 kids at Balsam Brook.
We'll need a full bar to compliment our meal.

Early Rut

You never know what you may stumble upon in your travels around Kildare.
I was with the "usual suspects" and we stumbled upon something that most people don't get a chance to see.

Winter Fun

For anybody that hasen't been to Kildare during the winter, it can be a lot of fun (if Don isn't anywhere on the park). A bit more planning needs to take place, but if all the stars align, it's even more peaceful during the hibernating season.
This photo of Matt and me is from last weekend. We actually dove our sleds down this steep hill. Don, you really need to get a brush guard on your sled. We didn't have gel batteries in the sleds so we didn't ride them on that big, wide open, flat surface going 75 mph at all.
Jude couldn't take the vibration and noise from the snowmobile. This happened to me both days that I took him for a ride. I had to hold his helmet like a football, and steer the sled with my right hand. I didn't even have a free hand for my beer.
